Impact Stories

Nelly's Story

In the bustling city of Auckland, a 15-year-old named Nelly faced overwhelming odds when kicked out of his home, uprooted to the town of  Waitara. Struggling with mental health, he teetered on the edge, uncertain if he'd see the next day. But then Nelly meets a youth worker from the Waitara Taiohi Trust offering hope and a lifeline to a brighter future.

Under the youth worker's guidance, Nelly's life took a dramatic turn. With unwavering support from joining the trust programmes, his gifts were recognised, and safe spaces nurtured his growth. His resilience led to him becoming a school prefect, a testament to the transformative power of the trust's support.

Now a passionate and qualified youth worker, Nelly seeks to support others facing similar mental health battles. He rekindled his education, achieving a significant milestone in passing level three NCEA, a first in his family. His journey continues as he advocates for the well-being of the taioihi of Waitara, inspired by the trust's impact on his life.
